Fault phenomenon: BMW N55 abnormal engine noise. Engine power decreases. The engine malfunction light comes on.
Troubleshooting: Broken or loose intake-side and exhaust-side VANOS unit retaining bolts.
Check for broken or loose bolts on the intake and exhaust side VANOS units.
Once one or both VANOS unit bolts are found to have broken or loosened, replace both VANOS units and use part number 06 or newer.

- Before replacing the VANOS unit, filter the oil, remove the oil pan, and check for debris and damaged bolts.
