Chevrolet Cruze Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor Troubleshooting.

A 2014 1.6L GM Chevrolet Cruze sedan with 58,000 miles. According to the driver’s description, in the process of driving, the vehicle can’t accelerate, and it feels like stepping on the accelerator pedal is out of order and doesn’t work, but after the engine is turned off and then restarted, the engine starts normally and the engine malfunction light is always on. Received the car after the initial inspection, started the engine, normal; engine tachometer shows that the speed of 990r/min, idle speed is high; step on the accelerator pedal when the engine does not respond; fault light is always on.

 

Fault phenomenon: 2.1 Troubleshooting a static.

The test result is that the static data stream is abnormal and does not meet the specified value.

2.2 Troubleshooting – Dynamic Reading of Fault Codes and Data Streams at Dynamic 

Start the engine, use the automotive fault diagnostic instrument KT-600 to read the engine control module fault code, the specific operation is the same as the static menu path, and read the dynamic fault code and data flow with the static read the same results, so the test results are dynamic data flow is abnormal, does not comply with the specified value.

2.3 Troubleshooting – One Other.

3. Circuit analysis.

Accelerator pedal position sensors 1 and 2 are located in the pedal assembly and have 2 built-in position sensing APP1 and APP2 in the form of potentiometers.If one of the 2 sensor circuits fails, the K20 Engine Control Module uses the other to calculate the accelerator pedal position so that the vehicle can continue to be driven; if both circuits fail, the K20 Engine Control Module assumes that the accelerator pedal is in the released, the throttle is closed, and the engine is idling. Each sensor has a 5V reference voltage circuit, a low level reference voltage circuit and a signal circuit.

  • 5V Reference Voltage Circuit ① Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor APP1K20 (Engine Control Module)/X1-5 Terminal I B107 (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor).
  • Terminal:2 Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor APP2:K20 (Engine Control Module)/X 1-19 terminal → B 107 (Accelerator Pedal Position Maker Module)/X1-21 terminal.
  • Signal circuit ① Accelerator pedal position sensor APP1B107 (accelerator pedal position sensor)-3 terminal → K20 (engine control module)/X1-40 terminal; ② Accelerator pedal position sensor APP2:B107 (accelerator pedal position sensor)-6 terminal → K20 (engine control module)/X1-42 terminal.

In summary, the accelerator pedal position sensor 1-2 unreasonable reasons, it is likely that the parts of the fault is: ① B107 accelerator pedal position sensor itself is damaged; ② short circuit or disconnection of the relevant circuit; (3) K20 engine control module is damaged.

 

Troubleshooting: 4.1 Testing the Low-Level Reference Voltage Circuit .

  • Place the ignition switch in the “OFF” position and disconnect the B107 accelerator pedal position sensor harness connector. Insert the test probes into the B107-4 and B107-5 terminals of the connector (do not allow the pen of a digital multimeter to be inserted directly into the connector terminals to prevent damage to the terminals).
  • With a digital multimeter to measure the resistance between the probe of the B107-4 terminal and the body hitch, the standard resistance value: less than 5, the actual measurement of 0.3. The test results are in line with the specified value, the accelerator pedal position sensor APP1 low-level reference voltage circuit is normal.

4.2 Testing the 5V Reference Voltage Circuit .

  • Place the ignition switch in the “ON (on)” position, insert the test probe into the connector B107-1 terminal and B107-2 terminal. With a digital multimeter to measure the B107-1 terminal probe and the body of the voltage between the hitch, the standard voltage value: 4.8 ~ 5.2 V, the actual measurement of 4.9 V. The test results comply with the specified value, K20 engine control module is normal.
  • With a digital multimeter to measure the voltage between the B107-2 terminal probe and the body hitch, the standard voltage value: 4.85.2 V, the actual measurement of 5.0 V. The test results comply with the specified value, K20 engine control module is normal.

4.3 Testing the accelerator pedal position sensor .

1 and 2 voltage parameters with automotive fault diagnostic instrument KT-600 read APP Sen-sor and APPSensor2 parameters, the standard should be APPSensor and APPSensor2 voltage parameters are lower than 0.1V, the actual measurement of APP Sensor and APP Sen-sor2 voltage parameters of 0.02V test results in line with the specified value, the K20 engine control module is normal. 4.4 Test signal voltage circuit .

Install a jumper wire with a 3A fuse between connector terminals B107-2 and B107-3; install another jumper wire with a 3A fuse between terminals B107-1 and B107-6.

The ignition switch is placed in the “ON (on)” position, with the automotive fault diagnostic instrument KT-600 read APP Sensor and APP Sensor2 parameters, the standard should be APP Sensor and APP Sensor2 voltage parameter is higher than 4.8V, the actual measurement of APP Sensorl voltage parameter is 5.0V. The voltage parameter of APP Sensorl is 5.0V, and the voltage parameter of APPSen-sor2 is 4.9V. The test result is in accordance with the specified value of the signal circuit of APP1 and APP2 of accelerator pedal position sensor is normal.

4.5 Final conclusions .

The low-level reference voltage circuit, 5V reference voltage circuit and signal voltage circuit are all normal, and the accelerator pedal position sensor 1 and 2 voltage parameters are also normal, proving that there are no short circuits or breaks in the accelerator pedal position sensor 1 and 2 circuits, and that the K20 engine control module is not damaged. Then the cause of the failure can only be B107 accelerator pedal position sensor itself is damaged.

Read the fault code with KT-600 again, the diagnostic instrument shows: the system is normal. Read the dynamic data related to the fault code:Depressing and releasing the accelerator pedal, APPSensor varies between 0.32~4.87V; APPSensor2 varies between 0.16~2.30V. The data flow is normal, and the fault is completely eliminated.
